Assembly & Care

My head tube is somewhat out of round. What kind of problem is it?

It depends on how much the head tube is out of round. Seriously out of round head tubes can be a big problem and may require a factory repair. They are often caused by damage from an unusual impact. The welding process will to some extent, ovalize the head tube. After welding, we machine and ream the head tube to assure a proper press fit with standard headsets. Some residual distortion may remain after welding, but it does not prevent proper headset installation. Steel has plenty of ability to move as you insert the head cups. Up to 1/2 (.5) mm discrepancy between the long and the short axis won't be a problem even for aluminum cups. Up to 1mm for steel cups will also work. We can often "round" many damaged head tubes with special tools and techniques at the factory. In extreme cases, a new head tube may be required. Many mechanics are not used to working with steel. Aluminum and carbon fiber are not nearly as forgiving as steel. Unless those materials are perfectly machined, you risk damaging the frame. Not so with steel, so you can install that headset with confidence.
