How can I get a disc brake fork with the ride of my classic steel rim brake fork
|
Because of the nature of the braking stress of disc brakes, fork design has had to be completely re-thought. When we hit the brakes on a rim brake fork, the force of effort needed to achieve a certain level of stopping power is considerably lower than on a disc brake bike. Think of a rim as being a super-big disc. As a result braking is more efficent.
What's more with rim brakes, the braking action takes place at the strongest and best supported part of the fork, right by the bottom of the head tube. By contrast, disc brakes not only place the braking force by what is historically the weakest part of the frame, the fork blades act as a huge lever against the steerer tube (which is why the steerer tubes need to be 1-1/8" or larger). The fork blades must be strengthened from top to bottom in order to handle the stresses of disc braking.
A properly designed disc brake fork will never have the flex needed to match the ride quality of a steel rim brake fork. To compensate, tire sizes must grow and tire pressures must fall in order to provide the proper level of cushioning. Fortunately, there is no increase in rolling resistance with bigger tires and indeed there is evidence of lower rolling resistance for larger tires of similar design to their skinnier counterparts.
Disc brakes have three advantages over rim brakes:
- Improved braking in wet conditions. That's because the intense braking pressure of disc braking more easily squeezes any water off the braking surface. Because disc brakes are off the ground muc more than rims, they tend to collect less moisture in the the first place.
- Eliminates brake wear on the rims, which are a lot more expensive to replace than a worn disc rotor.
- On long, steep descents where there may be a need to brake for long periods of time, the disc rotor heats up instead of the rim avoiding possibly compromising of the tires.
If the above advantages are not an issue - like a fair weather rider with heavy rims in an area will limited vertical drops, you can achieve a nicer ride with a well designed steel rim brake fork.
