Geometry and Fit

Can't you just build a bike based on Fit Kit® measurements?

We can, but measurements alone do not constitute a proper fitting and do not by themselves define one particular ideal frame geometry.

The Fit Kit provides a great starting point for fitting a rider at a particular point in time. Even the Fit Kit people say that it is designed to provide a "safe and developmental" position for the rider. "Safe and developmental" means a starting point for achieving the ideal fit. Many factors may dictate deviation from Fit Kit recommendations including:

  • The rider's riding objectives. For most riders, comfort is and should be the most important consideration. The athlete seeking the "perfect" riding position is often more willing than most people to accept initial discomfort in order to achieve proper form. As much as possible, a serious athlete's coach should participate in the fitting to assure sizing consistent with the coach's other recommendations.
  • The rider's habits and riding style. Some riders are used to stretching much farther out than typical riders. Other riders achieve so much more power from sitting relatively upright that the increased wind resistance from a "poor position" doesn't make up for the increase in power and endurance.
  • The rider's physiology. Some riders can't stretch, some can't bend, some have bad backs and that's just the start to the list of complications which might affect fit.
  • The rider's experience. A rider adding the fifth or sixth road bike to his or her stable often already knows what they want. Somebody stepping up to their first serious road bike will benefit most from starting with proper measurements.

Fit Kit acknowledges these conditions and no system today can measure them. That's where judgment and sensitivity to the rider's objectives comes into play. We recommend as much as possible that you confirm your fitting recommendations by simulating the recommended riding position on some kind of fit cycle. There are a couple of fitting machines which let you do this. If you don't have one, try setting up on a wind trainer.

Fit Kit's recommendations, just like Waterford's geometries, fit a broad cross-section of riders. The exceptions are important to recognize as early as possible in the process. When you do so, you dramatically increase the chances of getting the fit you want.
