How long a seatpost do I need?

The real question is, how much seat post insertion do I need? Seatposts all come with a max height lines about 65mm from the end of the seatpost. This is not enough for most people and on many of today\'s designs. We recommend no less then 100mm (4 inches of insertion) - preferably more. The 65mm was designed when seatposts were only 180mm. Now that the standard posts are 280-450mm, more of the post needs to be inside the frame. The greater the insertion, the better the support of the seatpost and the lower the tendency for the seatpost to slip. If the seatpost is too high, you can damage the frame - in a non-warranty way. The heavier the rider, the more important it is to have a correspondingly strong seatpost. Riders over 220 lbs (100 kg), should use a mountain bike post. It reduces wear and tear on the frame at the same time reduces the possibility of seatpost slippage. On actual mountain bikes, we prefer 125mm (5\" or more) as the minimum insertion. This standard was set for an older style of bike - one where the seattube ends right at the top of the top tube.
