Geometry and Fit

Why does Waterford sometimes recommend 650C or 26" wheels?

On smaller sizes, the best way to achieve the proper riding position is to use 650C or 26" wheels. The smaller wheels let us build a shorter frame, accomodating people with shorter legs.

The smaller wheels also let us minimize toe overlap when the rider needs a short top tube. Toe overlap occurs when the rider's toe can touch the front wheel - usually when the wheel is turned to the right and the left pedal is in its most forward position.

When toe overlap is 1cm or less, it presents an annoyance only at low speeds (such as below 5 miles per hour). The greater the toe overlap, the greater the speed at which contact can occur and the greater the likelihood of a crash.

When proper fit dictates a particular seat angle and top tube length that creates toe overlap for a 700C wheel, designing the frame around 650C wheels means an extra 25mm of toe clearance. This can be critical to achieve a good fit.

The advantages of 700C wheels over the smaller wheels are real, but for a rider whose dimensions require the smaller wheel, the benefits of good fit are far more valuable.
