Troubleshooting

What do I do for a stuck seatpost or bottom bracket?

Seatposts and bottom brackets have gotten stuck for as long as there have been seatposts and bottom brackets. These parts interact electro-chemically with the frame, forming a bond stronger than most glues. It generally requires a chemical reaction to dissolve the bond, allowing you to remove the part.

PB B\'laster penetrating catalyst dissolves rust and corrosion that forms bond that causes seatposts and bottom brackets to freeze. Spray it on a seatpost so it can run down between the seatpost and the seat tube. Be sure to wipe it off painted surfaces. For bottom brackets, remove the seatpost and spray down the seat tube to reach the inside of the bottom bracket. It does take time for the penetrating process to work, so try to move the parts after a couple of hours and don\'t be surprised if a few applications are required.

In extreme cases, chemicals are not enough. We can, at the factory, extract nearly all the tougher cases, though the risk to the paint and to the part is quite high. In some cases, we must apply a torch to the seat tube or bottom bracket shell, destroying the paint. In other cases, we cut out the seatpost or drill out the bottom bracket assembly.

To avoid these kinds of problems, either lubricate or wax (in the case of composite seatposts) the seat tube to prevent direct contract and therefore corrosion between the parts. Your owner\'s manual has more details.
